PURPOSE

'Creating meaningful, measurable change where it's needed most'

Our two main goals

The Impact Lab Amsterdam at the University of Amsterdam, led by Prof. dr. Paul Smeets, conducts research on extraordinary charitable impact through two complementary approaches:

  1. Evaluating charitable interventions with the potential for 100x greater effectiveness than average charities in the cause area.

  2. Studying what motivates donors to give more and give more effectively, seeking to understand the psychological and economic drivers behind impactful philanthropy.

Create more highly effective charities and inspire donors to give to these charities.

Focus on making transformative impact

This dual focus creates a multiplier effect by identifying exceptional initiatives while motivating donors to support them. The lab primarily concentrates on addressing critical issues in global health, extreme poverty, and gender equality in low-income countries, where evidence suggests the potential for transformative impact is large.

Top charities are about 100-times more effective as average charities
